Video Call Etiquette for Dummies!
With online meetings becoming the new normal, here are a few tips on things we need to take of, some do’s and some serious don’ts!
Check your environment:
- Optimal lighting and minimal background noise make you look and sound professional. Avoid sitting with your back to a window or a light!
- Try to have a neutral background like a white wall behind you! Avoid giving people a view of things you normally wouldn’t!
- Join a couple minutes early to check your equipment and network connection.
- Try to avoid having background sounds in the room that don’t add value to the meeting.
- If you live with others, let them know that your meeting is about to begin and how long it will last.
Dress to impress:
- Treat meeting on video as you would an in-person meeting. If you would wear a suit, go ahead and put on your suit jacket. If superman is your work thing, well go for it too!
- Don’t forget to put on a smile. 🙂
- Clean up, brush your hair, and groom yourself like any other day at work!
Get people involved:
- Be sure that everyone is comfortable and participating while in your meeting, just like you would if you were around a table.
- Enter your meetings with a planned agenda to get the best value of your time!
Basics:
- Participate like everyone else. If it’s a video call, your video too, must be switched on at all times! Let’s avoid talking from behind a wall and having your teammates ask you to show yourself!
- Don’t multitask during your meeting. Undivided attention & eye contact during calls is a sign of respect for others.
- Sit up on a proper table and not be lazing in bed during calls! Let’s avoid the wrong signals!
- Avoid typing during calls. Spare us from the thumping sounds of your keyboard! Use a pen and paper instead!
- If you don’t have anything important to say, keep yourself on mute. Background noises can often be very disturbing!
